11/2/25 Camp Hope Update – Jen Castañeda

Recap of Loveland Justice League & Loveland Cares Meeting 11-02-2025

We currently have 150-180 unhoused individuals in Loveland.

LRC open date has been extended to March 15th, 2026. The LRC only holds space for 20 women inside and 20-25 men outside in the back parking lot area. That leaves 105-135 unhoused community members with nowhere to go or be safely sheltered.

Also LRC does not shelter families or children.

Current issues:
– Urgent needs of Winter gear, Jen updated the items list and that is attached as a google doc.

– Porta-potties are not serviced often enough at LRC and have been overflowing, limited shower availability is an issue.
Both serious health and safety issues.

– Discussed a sharps container at Calvary church however there are legal issues which would need to be addressed and researched further.

– House of Neighborly Services helps low-income individuals, not the unhoused. However, HNS provided a short list of things that could possibly be accessible with proof of income and ID’s. Jen emailed Cherri at HNS last week.

*9News Kyle Clark is holding a fundraiser and matching donations to HNS for the unhoused, and he will be notified by Jen this week that HNS does not help the unhoused.

– Unhoused have limited ability to receive mail at LRC and some mail is not making it to them. Jen spoke with the manager of the downtown post office last week to discuss options but unfortunately the post office is unable to assist with any ability for people to go there directly for their mail.

-Sponsor/Adopt an unhoused person or family. We will be seeking individuals, organizations and churches willing to participate in the ability to sponsor or adopt an unhoused person or family to assist with those advocacy needs as well as funding or housing temporarily. This may even be able to include potential sponsors for permanent housing. There will be some safety concerns that will need to be further researched pertaining to background screenings and risk assessments for those who may be open to taking in someone for temporarily housing them or co-signing for permanent housing.

Several people went to Calvary church on 11-02-2025 to inquire about their desire to close their parking lot to people serving our unhoused. Loveland Police told Calvary that LPD will no longer be doing anything to help them, should they call, until Calvary makes their parking lot a “no trespassing zone” to the unhoused and allies, so this was LPD initiated/instigated action to end feeding or permitting belongings on their property.  Jen is setting up a meeting with the church leadership to discuss options with them specifically.

Every Loveland church was sent a letter on October 10th inviting them to be part of the solution for the unhoused. Together Colorado of LarimerCounty, Loveland Cares and Pro Neighbor community members sent that letter with ZERO RESPONSES BACK. The churches are focusing their efforts on helping their own congregations needs, and not the unhoused crisis. We are looking to hold them via their 501C3 status and IRS status, accountable; if they are unwilling to serve their community during this crisis.

-We have several people who are going to notify the community via Craigslist, Next Door, & others that all Loveland Churches have been invited to be part of the solution, in an effort to encourage their congregation to ask their churches what they are doing to help the unhoused. We also hope to get more help from non-church going community members.

– Namaqua Unitarian has been a great ally and
– Mount Zion (only 8 slots available) and ??? alternate for Safe Parking.

We need volunteers to go to local churches with a focus on those in the immediate downtown area and closest to the Community Kitchen and LRC locations and remind them they were sent the invite letter, and asked how they are willing to help.

The following areas are the specific asks:
1. Have congregation members donate to the items list for Camp Hope
2. Post QRC for Go Fund Me, in weekly pamphlet for services
3. Post Amazon wish list with address for shipping location
4. Allow Camp Hope Speaker to come speak to congregation for education and options to give
5. Host a drop off site for needed items
6. Host meals for our unhoused
7. Be a location for Safe Parking Lots
8. Be a safe location for storing personal belongings of our unhoused
9. Open Church as a Safe Indoor shelter option.
10. Be a Sponsor for an unhoused person or Family

Turns out you can set up a table for your own charitable purpose in front of any King Soopers, and you don’t have to ask their permission. We will be working on setting up dates to collect donations in front of King Sooper locations.

We now have a drop site for donation storage, and to send Amazon packages for people who choose to go the Amazon route. Please email protyusagendher@invisiblymisdiagnosed.com for more information.

Despite that LRC can only hold up to 45 people to sleep at night, and is open as a day time shelter option, the unhoused continue to be harassed, ticketed, and even arrested right outside LRC.

Our female unhoused are stalked, harassed, repeatedly assaulted, and trafficked by trafficking rings. Poising serious safety risks for all women, young men and those in the LGBTQIA2 community. Unfortunately this has included some within LPD and Larimer County Sheriff Officers.

Larimer County has a for-profit jail system in which every single unhoused person who is arrested and detained then also has to pay daily fees to be imprisoned and can cost upwards of $3,000 per month on top of any ticket or court fines associated, essentially creating a pipeline to jail, and eventually a pipeline to prison, and it is not helping the situation for anyone, especially our unhoused.

Community members are working to request investigating LPD, and LCS illegal activities. Please consider being a co-signer of the letter. The idea is the more people we have signing, the less he can ignore our pleas for help. There is zero reason any of us should have to put up with criminals masquerading as law enforcement. She would like to include specific details of any incidents anyone has witnessed, so if you have any details, please contact her via email. SummerhawkNation@gmail.com

Thank you all for the wonderful work you are doing, and keep it up!
