My gender is pockets and sunshine 
And having a nice time not having to sit right 
Because of sex I had to hide 

My gender is tripping over afternoon pebbles 
The outcast rebel, how dare I develop 
Mountainous terrain and hormone levels 

My gender is hiding from anxiety 
From years of what they do to me, on the street 
Traumas embedded for eternity 

My gender is teaching and growth 
Sharing what I know, mentoring those below 
Revealing a world for them to behold 

My gender is early morning coffee 
Books when I have time to think 
Time I spend writing for just me 
Chasing my child down the street 
A forced-out primal pillow scream 
The power behind my hopes and dreams 
The mess that got on everything 
The rules that bow me down to bleed 

 

My gender is second guessing 
Hair messing 
Doubts that I can’t figure out 

My gender is rejection from my momma’s mouth 
Every time my name fell out 

My gender is a raging bonfire 
Flames reaching stretching higher and higher 
Warming the recesses in my soul where I hide 

My gender is getting a little high 
By the water side 

My gender is rageful dissent 
Against the struggle to pay rent 
My mouth no longer blowing kisses 
No longer feeling reminiscent  

My gender is survival 
My gender is my arrival to myself 
My gender avoids your expectation 
Of mishaps and hesitation 

My gender is board games 

Good food 
Running wild 
Being nude 
Hands in the air 
Long embraces 
Recognition 
On friend’s faces 
It’s working hard 
To make the money 
And playing hard 
To find the funny 
And fighting hard 

Against a system that would break me 

A wild card 

The reason so many hate me
