Autism Part Two- History on Repeat
If you’ve been playing along at home, you may have read my post “Autism,” which talked about my own lived experiences, and the ways in which Autistics have been overlooked and neither diagnosed nor treated in the past.
I have also been writing in this series about The Cult of the Ego, and the forces of conformity and control that keep it going.
We’ve talked about ways that the government has standardized conformity as it did with the Presidential Fitness Test.
We’ve talked about how the conformity of dysregulation on a national level is maintained in the dysregulated home and how all of these systems utilize SCRIPTs to maintain the status quo.
Most recently, I contrasted all of this against cultures that have mechanisms to keep dysregulation in check including Bonobos, Inuit, San, and Khoikhoi groups.
These two conversations intersect at PDA- Pathological Demand Avoidance.
Although most of the literature sees this as a failure that needs to be overcome, I suggest that this trait is an evolutionary safeguard against tyranny.
It’s a bold claim, but I’ve gotten increasingly more comfortable with making bold claims. I also welcome your feedback.
Today, I would like you to consider this TikTok. I couldn’t be more excited that my friend Ashley is creating content, because I value her critical thinking skills and trust her rigor. This short video explores the history between Autism and Authoritarians.
