59) T Was Easier to Love than Me

A Better Daughter

Before my brother went into the Navy he worked at Elitch Gardens, back when it was still a garden. My cousin worked there with him (and, no surprise, joined the Navy with him as well). They both got Elitch girlfriends.

Mom absolutely loved it. They were all coming to her for advice, and she was the cool mom. She really liked my brother’s girlfriend which felt really promising. My cousin’s girlfriend was like a missing family member we didn’t know had been lost.

She was an immediate fit, and had genuine authentic relationships with each of us. She had so many inside jokes with Grandpa, and brought his new life. Even Grandma perked up with her around.

She included me in things, and was actually interested in my life. It was like having a big sister for a little while.

She and Mom would talk for HOURS, in person, on the phone, whatever.

If T was coming over, we’d get out the cards, and we spent so many nights staying up super late playing rummy. I think she even learned how to play Pitch just to play with us.

She went to Mom about everything. I can remember when she was crushed because my cousin was about to go into the Navy, and she had planned this super special night and first-time things were supposed to happen.

She had shaved her legs and armpits and got the worst razor burn. She was blonde and fair skinned, and was in so much pain.

My cousin blew her off. He either did not catch the hints, or didn’t want to. She was destroyed, and he left.

We kept her though. He might have been gone, but we kept just as in touch with her. Actually, it was even better because he was off at boot camp, and we didn’t have to share her with him.

I wanted so badly to have a similar relationship with my mom. It just wasn’t there.
